A mysterious fire Thursday night razed down several business stalls in the vast Daraja Mbili market in Kisii town.

It broke out of one stall at 10. 00 at night before spreading to the adjacent more others, witnesses said.

Officers from the fire emergency department did not contain the fire as they had turned up when most stalls had gone up in flames.

Thomas Kebunde, an affected trader, told the Star they had lost millions of shillings to the inferno.

“While it is not easy to quantify everything right away, it definitely runs into millions,” he told the Star.

Mary Kereira, a other trader said her entire stock was destroyed by the fire and looks at stark prospects owing to the loss.

“There is nothing left but these smoldering trash, nothing… Oh Jesus help me,” she said amid sobs pointing to the destruction in other shops and stalls.

Police in Kisii say they have begun investigations into the incident.

“Our officers are already on the scene and we shall get a clear picture of what happened and what shall be done,” stated Charles Kasses, County police chief.
