Two players struck dead in friendly match in Kitutu C

Football officials in Kitutu Chache, Kisii, say at least two football players have been killed by lightning during a match at Manyansi area, a border town neighboring Nyamira .

The teams – Manyansi and Nyagiti were playing a friendly in the 4.30 pm incident.

Most affected was Manyansi which lost two players.

The deceased were identified by football officials as Sammy Musa, 20 and Joshua Nyangaresi, 21

Nyangaresi was however playing for Nyagiti when he was struck dead.

Both teams play in Kisii side the officials have clarified.

Police from the area however, said they were yet to be briefed of the tragedy.

“We are trying to get information on the same, i will brief you as soon as i get it,” a senior officer in Marani said by phone.

Evans Akanga, Kitutu Chache North Football Kenya Federation chair said the players were struck dead Saturday evening during the friendly tournament.

Two other players, Alex Kenedy (Manyansi) and a Denis are nursing injuries at Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital where they were rushed to for emergency treatment .

“The teams were having a friendly match when it suddenly begun to rain in torrents” he stated

Manyansi football team captain Jeff Matara said those reported injured incurred slight injuries.
