Uasin Gishu county issues alert over death of initiates in circumcision shrines

Uasin Gishu county has issued an alert over the death of several initiates in circumcision shrines in the region.

County Chief Officer of Health Dr Joyce Sang did not give the exact number of deaths but confirmed that several had succumbed after falling in the shrines.

Dr Sang has issued a circular to heath officers in the county to immediately visit the shrines and report on their conditions.

“It has come to my attention that during the month of November and December that several initiates have fallen sick after circumcision as a result of complications arising from the circumcision”, said Dr Sang in the circular dated December 6th, 2023.

She says unfortunately several death have been recorded across the county over the same.

“This is to instruct you to visit the shrines and asses and asses the hygiene and sanitation status” , said Dr Sang.

She has also instructed the health officers to also get records on death which have occurred in the shrines.

She has instructed the health officers to carry out the inspection as from tomorrow and report back by December 11th 2023.
