A criminal case in which two
politicians have been charged with
obtaining Sh12.7 million in a fake gold
deal has been pushed to October 16.
Seth Steve Okute who contested for
Karachuonyo parliamentary seat on an
Orange Democratic Movement ticket and
Bruno Otieno Olienda vied for Suna East
MP as an independent candidate and
both lost have since denied defrauding
USD100,000, which is equivalent to
Sh12.7 million from one Marjorie R
Grant.
The case was scheduled for hearing
before Milimani chief magistrate Susan
Shitubi but it could not proceed since
the trial magistrate is on leave. The
matter has been set to proceed for two
days from October 16 and 17,2023 without
further delay.
According to the prosecution the offence
was committed on November 9, 2022, at
I&M Bank within Nairobi County with the
intent to defraud.
The accused persons allegedly obtained
the millions by falsely pretending that
Newsky’s Global Cargo Movers
International ltd were in a position to
pay customs duties for 33 kilograms of
gold shipped from Burkina Faso a fact
they knew to be false.
Okute and Otieno Olienda are also
charged with conspiracy to obtain Sh12,7
million from Marjorie by falsely
pretending they were in a position to
pay customs duties for 33 kilograms of
gold shipped from Burkina Faso to Zurich
a fact they knew was false.
The magistrate has since ordered the
police to release three phones and his
Mercedes Benz, which were seized from
Bruno which was recovered from him
during his arrest. .Each of them are out
on a cash bail of Sh 600,000 pending
the hearing and determination of the
case
