Rogue Ankit Kumar Patel and Bethwel Kipkorir Chebet charged with Sh 86M Fraud

Two employees of a steel manufacturing company have been charged with stealing Sh86 million from the heavy industry firm.

Ankit Kumar Patel and Bethwel Kipkorir Chebet denied the charges when they appeared separately before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.

The court heard that Patel and Chebet, employees of Abbysinia Iron and Steel Limited in Athi River, Machakos County, conspired to steal a total of Sh86,159,377 from Abbysinia Iron and Steel Limited.

They were also charged with stealing by servants contrary to section 281 of the Penal Code.

Prosecutor Anderson Gikunda did not object to the accused being released on bail.

Mr Gikunda said bail was a constitutional right, but urged the court to impose strict conditions given the amount of money involved.

The magistrate ordered the accused to be released on Sh1 million cash bail with an alternative bond of Sh5 million.

“You will be arraigned before the Citi Court where further instructions will be given. The magistrate will set pre-trial dates,” Mr Onyina ruled.
