More than 3,500 employees of Moi University have threatened to boycott work due to non payment of salaries.

Officials from unions represemting the workers met in Eldoret and said they would boycott work as from 3rd of next month if the management of the university does not pay them.

They were led by UASU brach secretary Dr Busolo Wegesa, Mary Chepkwemoi from KUSU and Benson Magasi from KUDHEIHA

They are demanding salaries for February and March apart from other allowances.

Dr Wegesa said most of the employees were unable to report to work because they had no money to use as fare or for other basic needs including food.

The university has been facing serious financial challenges with debts running to over sh 6 Billion.

The debts include unremitted statutory deductions for the workers.

Chepkwemoi said the employees were also concerned with irregular deductions on their salaries.

“The university has ignored our signed CBA agreement and keeps on making illegal deductions from our salaries without consulting anyone”, said Chepkwemoi.

Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Isaac Kosgey was locked in a meeting at the University and could not be accessed for comment.

Other officials said the crisis meeting was to discuss the salaries crisis among other matters.
